How Google, Apple, and Microsoft Aim to Make People Get Rid of Passwords

For decades, entering a password as a way to identify yourself when accessing a website has been the only option. In 2022, there are plenty of other ways to confirm your identity when you need to access an account, either through a browser or an app installed on your device.

Using passwords isn’t a very modern way of dealing with the situation. You could forget the password, someone could steal it from you, or somebody could be able to crack it one day remotely, regardless of how good you think your antivirus is.

Google, Apple, and Microsoft team up to eliminate passwords

According to ArsTechnica.com, the three tech behemoths, Google, Apple, and Microsoft, are launching a common goal of getting rid of the password. Ironically enough, they’re apparently doing so as a way of celebrating the ‘World Password Day.’

The FIDO Alliance along with the World Wide Web Consortium, have worked to create a standard way of signing in that doesn’t involve any passwords. Therefore, Google, Apple, and Microsoft want to expand their support for that achievement.

In a post made yesterday, May 5, the FIDO Alliance said the following on its website, with no room for misinterpretation:

In a joint effort to make the web more secure and usable for all, Apple, Google and Microsoft today announced plans to expand support for a common passwordless sign-in standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. The new capability will allow websites and apps to offer consistent, secure, and easy passwordless sign-ins to consumers across devices and platforms.

The new method is known as a “multi-device FIDO credential” or a “passkey.” It works in a pretty simple way: the app or website a user wants to sign in at will send a request to his phone. The user will have to grab his phone and authenticate with a PIN code or biometric. That’s pretty much all. Of course, perhaps everybody has experienced such things already, but the method described must be implemented as a replacement for the classic password system.
