Online dating violence is on the rise, and those who look for love across social apps know it very well. Tinder remains one of the most popular dating apps out there, which is why the developers in charge of it are doing even more to make the users feel safe.

The procedure of getting a match on Tinder is as simple as it can be. Once you and the person you like swipe right to each other’s profiles, which is the equivalent of a ‘like’ function, you two get the chance to speak to one another via messages or even a video call. In other words, you’re matched with someone. But what if the person you like on Tinder has a bad reputation after harassing someone online? That’s where the new function of the famous dating app kicks in.

You can now run background-checks in-app

According to the team behind the Tinder app, users from the US now have the chance of running background checks in-app for screening a person for harmful behavior in the past. One of the conditions is for those two to be matched with one another. To make it possible, Tinder had teamed up with Garbo, meaning a company that runs online background checks.

However, no essential information about a suspect or ‘bad’ person will be revealed, such as the phone number. In order to benefit from the functionality, users won’t have to pay anything for the first two background check searches. If they want more, they’ll need to pay a fee of $2.50.

Kathryn Kosmides, the founder of Garbo, explained as TinderPressRoom.com quotes:

We know that the biggest indicator of future abuse or violence is a history of these types of behaviors. Whether it’s online dating or the dozens of other ways we meet strangers in today’s digital age, we should know if we’re potentially putting our safety at risk,

We want to protect those most vulnerable to experiencing harm both online and offline and this is just the first step in delivering on our mission to help proactively prevent harm in the digital age.

What do you think? Will you feel safer on Tinder from now on?
