Nintendo has announced that they will be closing the Wii U and 3DS eShops at the end of March 2023. We know that they have been thinking about it for a while now, and Nintendo has confirmed it, as they have no plan on offering classic content in other ways.
Players were disappointed, as that means that many games available on the platform will not be kept for everyone.
The gaming giant has also talked about a gradual rollback. Fans won’t be able to buy any games with their credit cards after May 23, 2022, or eShop Cards after August 29, 2022. But you will still be able to add funds through the official Nintendo website.
Most of the games on Wii U and some 3DS titles were ported to Switch, but many of them can still only be found on those systems, and they cannot be ported.
3DS and Wii U eShops permanently closed
With all of this in mind, you will be able to redownload the 3DS and Wii U games that you’ve previously bought after March 2023. Players will still have full access to some of the games online for a while. It remains to be seen how long that will last.
3DS was released back in February 2011, and Wii U came out a year later, on November 18, 2012. Nintendo did not have any expectations about them in the beginning, but 3DS was a great success. But that was not the case with Wii U, which was one of its worst-selling consoles in the entire history of the company.
If you want to buy some 3DS or Wii U games, now you need to do it. Make sure you do it as soon as possible, as you might not get another chance.
