This weekend’s Boxing action has some stacked names and cards across various continents from Asia, Europe to the United States.
First up on Friday (today) we have a card being shown from Beijing, China with two world title bouts on the card. Firstly we have Jun Qiu Xiao( 20- 2 -0) facing Nehomar Cermeno (23- 5 -1) in a contest for the vacant WBA super bantamweight world title (regular) . The main attraction of this card is Dominican Republican Javier Fortuna (29-0-1) facing Jason Sosa (18-1-4) who is known for his controversial contest with Nicholas Walters which was scored a draw by majority. The main event is intriguing and of all the fights going on this weekend it’s certainly a top 3 fight of the week for me. The card can be viewed tonight on Boxnation and on CCTV5.
Saturday the 25th of June features huge cards/events from either side of the pond. Firstly In the UK we have the Sky Sports PPV card head lined by Heavyweight Anthony Joshua (16-0-0) in his his maiden Defence of the IBF heavyweight crown which he won in April of this year against Charles martin. Anthony’s foe on Saturday will be former Olympian of the 2012 games for the U.S.A Dominic Breazeale (17-0-0). The American is vastly confident in himself and backs himself to upset the odds with the bookmakers. I believe most fans are thinking not if Joshua knocks out Breazeale but a matter of when.
The supporting act of the card from London is an intriguing super middleweight clash between George Groves and Martin Murray. Both Men are in the last chance saloon and in many peoples opinion the looser has to retire as the drop down to domestic level wont interest either man. There has been strong suggestion that the winner of this fight will be lined up to face Fedor Chudinov for a shot at the WBA world title as indications are showing that Felix Sturm will be stripped after failing a drug test.
Chris Eubank JR will be defending his British middleweight title against Tom Doran. It shall be interesting to see eubank’s attitude in this fight with the Golovkin fight all but signed, a fight which he has been wanting for a while. Also on the card we have John Wayne Hibbert in a WBC silver title clash against Andrea Scarpa . This fight is scheduled at light welterweight. Other names featuring include Dillian Whyte, Kal Yafai, Anthony Ogogo , Connor Benn , Ted Cheeseman and Felix Cash .
Lastly but by no means the least we have the welterweight showdown from Barclays centre, Brooklyn, New York. The attraction is Keith Thurman defending his WBA world title against former IBF world champion at welterweight in Shawn Porter. This fight is arguably the fight of the weekend and this fight will go a long way in helping to determined who the best fighter is in the division. Expect a lot of eyes to be focused on this fight which promises to be entertaining with a true clash of styles who could meet head on. The fight will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and on CBS in the US.
