ESPN are reporting that IBF world super-lightweight titleholder Sergey Lipinets has suffered a hand injury, forcing his scheduled defence with Mikey Garcia to be called off. The contest was scheduled to take place on February 10th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and would have been Lipinets first world title defence since holding the IBF crown.
Lipinets (13-0) won the IBF title whilst it was vacant with victory over Akihiro Kondo on November 4th in New York. The title was previously held by Terence Crawford who has vacated all of his 140lb world titles after becoming undisputed world champion as he continues to prepare for his world title assault at 147lbs in 2018.
ESPN is also suggesting due to Lipinets v Garcia being forced off that is now highly likely the whole card will be pulled which included the rematch between Rances Barthelemy & Kiryl Relikh.
At the time of publication, neither party has confirmed or denied the injury along with promoter’s Ringstar who is headed up by Richard Schaefer. Ringstar were promoting the fight and event on behalf of Premier Boxing Champions.
