My Thoughts: Miguel Berchelt

I am writing about the named fighter above due to the fact I believe this fighter deserves a little more attention. So if you don’t know who he is, Miguel is 24 years old from Cancun, Mexico and has a record of 29-1 with 26 stoppages and one knockout defeat. He is currently the WBO interim title holder at super featherweight with the full status champion being Vasyl Lomachenko. Miguel is highly tipped as the best current super featherweight prospect to come out of mexico in recent years even ranked higher then fellow prospect Andres Gutierrez domestically who is not a natural super featherweight I may add. (Considering his recent announcement to potentially move up after his defeat to Cristian Mijares).

Miguel will possibly be most known to viewers from the UK with his fight in march when he fought UK’s George Jupp where Miguel’s big punching qualities knocked down Jupp 3 times in the fight before the fight being waved off in the 6th to spare George from more punishment.

So what are Miguel’s biggest skills? Well his hooks and uppercuts are extremely ferocious and know how to attack the body extremely well and very much fits the mold of your Mexican come forward fighter. He is a fighter who is devastating in attack and who will pump his guts to get the job done. This makes Miguel in my opinion to be one of my favourite boxers to watch just simply down to his style of fighting and his knock out power.

Miguel is fighting this weekend in defence of his WBO Interim super featherweight title against Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand. He is an extremely tough boxer and rugged who will come looking for Miguel and Miguel will go looking for Piriyapinyo so again this is an entertaining fight to watch. Piriyapinyo has only lost twice is his pro career once to Vasyl Lomachenko and Chris John long time WBA featherweight champion who made 19 defenses from 2004 to 2013 and defeating Juan Manuel Marquez along the way.

I strongly recommend catching this fight if you possibly can on Mexico Azteca (box Azteca) as this is a cracking fight between two men who won’t back down. The winner of this fight will possibly get the chance to face Vasyl Lomachenko who occupies the full title after defeating Roman Martinez. Who Miguel was mandatory for several months before Martinez decided to face Lomachenko.

Career highlights:

3x Mexican National Boxing Champion (elite)

WBC international Youth Super featherweight title

WBO NABO Super featherweight title

WBO Interim Super featherweight title
