Recently crowned EBU super-featherweight title holder according to the European Boxing Union (EBU) is currently in private negotiations to organise the first defence of his title, which he claimed on December 13th at London’s York Hall, Bethnal Green. The talented and former amateur standout Ward (19-0-2) defeated Juli Giner who was a former holder of the EBU title, knocking out the Spaniard in the sixth round to claim the then-vacant title. Martin currently holds British, Commonwealth titles along with the European title.
The EBU has stated via the state of situation title notices on the organisation’s website, stating that Ward and his team are currently in private negotiations with former European title challenger Samir Ziani (26-3-1). Samir is the current French super-featherweight title holder, a title which has held twice so far in his career to date. Ziani has challenged for the EBU twice in his career so far firstly against French rival Samir Kasmi in 2013 (loosing via UD) and most recently against Guillaume Frenois in November 2016 via the same outcome. Ziani’s only other defeat came against Richard Commey in 2014, losing via unanimous decision to the then previously unbeaten Ghanaian who has since challenged for world titles and cementing himself as a legitimate top fifteen ranked lightweight globally.
Neither negotiating party on the behalf of Ward or Ziani have confirmed or denied the status of the on-going negotiations, however, one would presume more details will be widely available come the turn of the new year.
