Very late on Saturday night (30th July) Belfast’s Carl Frampton takes to the ring to face long-time rival Leo Santa Cruz in the featherweight division. The card is being held at the Barclays centre, Brooklyn, New York and will be shown on Showtime in the United States and on Boxnation in the UK.
The main attraction on the bill is the clash of Frampton and Santa Cruz were both world champions in the super bantamweight division and both have moved up due to their struggles to make weight at super bantamweight. This fight is for the WBA super world featherweight title which is held by Leo Santa Cruz which he won in his clash with Abner Mares in 2015. This will be Carl’s debut at the new weight division and goes into clash with a new sense of determination to prove he can live up to Barry Mcguigan’s hype of being an Trans-Atlantic star in the states and in the UK and Ireland .
Also on the card we see the welcome return of Mikey Garcia after a 2 and a half year layoff with promotional issues with former promoter Top Rank. Mikey will be set on becoming a 3 weight champion within the next 12 months after this bout. He has publicly stated that he has eyes on WBO champion Terry Flanagan and hopes the fight can be made. Back to the 30th of the July and Mikey will be facing Elio Rojas in his fight back in the ring.
Danny Jacobs is still listed as fighting on the bill but to our knowledge no opponent has been announced.
Sergey Rabchenko will be featuring on the bill and will be facing Tony Harrison in a light middleweight bout. Ivan Redkach will be facing Tevin Farmer in a bout at lightweight. Fan favourite Paulie Malignaggi returns to the ring to face Gabriel Bracero. Paulie still insists that he still wants to capture the EBU title before he retires.
Also featuring on the bill is a female clash for the WBO female featherweight world title between Amanda Serrano and Calixta Silgado.
The card will be discussed this week on the hithardnews show this week.
