Barry McGuigan announced the next opponent for the extremely talented Josh Taylor who is being billed by Cyclone Promotions as Scotland’s finest. After becoming the first fighter to stop Miguel Vazquez Taylor sets his sights on another tough Mexican in the shape of two weight world champion Humberto Soto.
Beside Josh was Jason Easton who announced he will be fighting for the Super Lightweight Commonwealth Title as well as Lee McGregor, Joe Ham & Charlie Flynn who will also be on the bill. In addition to that Iain Trotter will also contest his first title fight against Marc Kerr and Chantelle Cameron will be making her first defence of the IBO World Lightweight Title that she won last year. The big heavyweight Martin Bakole will again be fighting in another step up and all in all, this has the makings of an excellent night of boxing that the fans won’t want to miss.
This fight will be shown live on Channel 5 with Spike TV also showing the undercard but as always there is nothing like going to a live fight night to revel in the atmosphere.
Josh admitted this would be another big test stating.
“Humberto is a great fighter. He’s been in with some top fighters, and I’ve got massive respect for him. I think it’s my time to shine though and I’ll make sure I come out on top. This could be a great fight for the fans, and I’m preparing for twelve hard rounds on March 3rd. Fingers crossed I can get the job done and move one step closer to my dream of winning a world title. I think it could end up being a tougher fight than Vazquez. However, the better the opponent, the better I’m going to be because I am going to be more up for it and it gets me going more. The further I move up in class the more my game is going to have to improve. I still have plenty work left to do before I’m the finished article but I am 100 percent confident of winning the fight although he will be dangerous”
I spoke with Barry McGuigan after the press conference and asked if he thought that the exciting Jason Easton V Glen Foot who is chief support could be the fight of the night.
“I do think that’s an excellent fight and let’s be honest Jason is never in a dull one as he is so exciting to watch. Glen Foot will definitely come to win so it will be a cracker for the fans but I’m not sure if it will be the fight of the night. The difference between this fight and the Taylor v Soto fight is that while they are both excellent boxers and have the talent for big titles Soto has already been there and done it several times over, you don’t win world titles at different weights unless you are a quality operator. This will be another good test for Josh against another very tough Mexican fighter and I actually think he is more dangerous than Vazquez was as he will want to attack and has better punch combinations. I do expect Josh to shine on the night though and that’s why I think it will not only be the fight of the night but also be the one that takes Josh to a shot at the World Title. Presuming he wins this one then we are looking at getting a World Title fight late summer or at the end of the year at the very latest.”
As to why this fight is being staged in Glasgow as opposed to Taylor’s home city of Edinburgh Barry explained it was purely down to the size of the venue and the expected demand for tickets.
“It was the only place we could get that’s going to be big enough laughed Barry, the guys on this bill all have fantastic support so we knew we were going to need a bigger venue to accommodate everyone. Glen Foot will also be bringing a lot of supporters up from Sunderland so it will be an amazing atmosphere and will be another night not to be missed for the fans, everyone should make sure they get their tickets quick as I know some people missed out last time.”
