Day 2 results from the Olympic pro qualifying from Vargas, Venezuela
Monday saw 18 bouts in total on the second day of this extraordinary qualifying process for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio which is set to start next month. There was action from the flyweight (52kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (64kg), welterweight (69kg), light heavyweight (81kg) and heavyweight (91kg) weight classes.
The action started with Turkey’s Yasin Yilmaz securing a point’s win over Puerto Rico’s Jose Javier Rosario. One judge scored the bout for Rosario with a scorecard of 29-28 in his favour. The remaining two scored it 29-28 in favour of Yilmaz. Yilmaz will now face highly rated Mexican Lindolfo Delgado in the last four. Former world champion at flyweight in the pro ranks Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand defeated German Artur Bril unanimously with a shutout score on all three scorecards. The Thai fighter will face Italian Carmine Tommasone who won his opening bout against Ukrainian Oleh Dovhun. The scores were unanimous in favour of the Italian professional.
Then the action started in the 81kg weight class. The first bout was between Hungary’s Norbert Nemesapati & Poland’s Mateusz Jerzy Tryc. The man from Poland won the bout on all three scorecards. Juan Carrillo of Columbia scored the first knockout of the competition. The Columbian knocked out Serbian Petar Maukovic inside two minutes of the first round. India’s Dilbag Singh defeated Moldovan Petru Ciobanu by split decision. Denys Soloenko of the Ukraine defeated Guojun Shi of China unanimously. Jonathan Esquivel of the USA won a close bout over Bulgarian Spas Genov by split decision. The American interestingly will face by highest profile boxer in this process in name of Hassan Ndam of who is a proven world level professional in the semi-finals.
To round up the Morning session we saw action in the 91kg class. The first bout saw Marko Calic of Croatia defeat Israel Duffus of Panama convincingly on all three scorecards. Julio Cesar Torres of Columbia progressed to the next stage with victory over American Cam F Awesome by all three judges.
The afternoon session kicked off with the 52kg class. Maksym Fatych of the Ukraine defeated Gaurav Bidhuri of India via points. German Touba Hamza defeated Hermogenes Elizabeth Castillo of Nicaragua via points.
The next class in action was in the 64 kg category. Thulasi Tharumalingam of Qatar defeated Italian Massimiliano Ballisai via points. Volodymyr Matviichuk of the Ukraine defeated Carlos Portillo of Paraguay via points. Hovhannes Bachkov OF Armenia defeated Irishman Raymond Moylette via points.
Youba Sissokho Ndiaye (69kgs class) of Spain defeated Ukrainian Serhii Bohaychuk and upset the masses due to fact the Ukrainian was a huge favourite to qualify for the games and potentially medal in the Olympics. Dimitrios Poulikos Tsagkrakos of Greece suffered defeat to Indian Neeraj Goyat via points. Arajik Marutjan of Germany dominated his opponent Paul Kroll of the US via points.
