AIBA WSB/AFB Olympic qualifying event 3-8 July

Day one results

Yesterday in South America we saw the controversial qualifying event which saw the participation of professional boxers in the qualifying process.  The Event in Vargas, Venezuela is being held in the Jose Maria Vargas dome and showed a solid attendance of 4,000 spectators for the opening day’s action.  There are 26 places up for grabs at this summer’s Olympic games in Brazil with 3 spots per weight class available excluding heavyweight (91kg) &  super heavyweight (91+kgs) where only the winner will qualify.

Yesterday’s action only contained 3 fights and the first fight saw Dominican Middleweight Raul Sanchez defeat Serbian Professional Geard Ajetovic in the middleweight preliminary bout (75kg). Sanchez in victory knocked down the Serbian twice in the final round. All 3 Judges scored the bout in favour of Raul Sanchez with scorecards of 29-27, 29-28, 29-27.

Egyptian super heavyweight (91kg+)  Ahmed Samir Abdelmoaz Hefny who has a professional record but now competes under the pro boxing system under AIBA scored progression into the next stage. The Egyptian scored a victory on the scorecards over Aruba’s Evan Nedd also a professional. The scorecards were split with one judge scoring the bout in favour of Evan Nedd with a card of 29-28. The other two judges scored the bout in favour of Hefny with the same score of 30-27 in the Egyptian’s favour.

In the second super heavyweight contest (91kg+) Rostyslav Arkhypenko of the Ukraine defeated American Brandon Lynch over the three round distance. The decision was unanimous with all three judges scoring the bout 30-27 in favour of the Ukrainian.

Monday 4th Schedule

Monday’s action see’s the action hot up with various weight classes. The Morning session sees former IBF flyweight Champion Amnat Ruenroeng make his bow in the tournament. The morning session will start at 11am local time and the action starts with the 60kg weight class at the quarter final stage.

Following the bouts above the final two bouts will be in the 91 kg weight class. The order is as follows. (Quarter final bouts)

The afternoon session starts at 3pm local time and sees action from the 52kg , 64kg and 69kg weight classes. The action starts with the 52kg class. In order (Quarter final bouts)
