Yvon Michel who promotes WBC world light-heavyweight titleholder Adonis Stevenson has formally announced that Adonis Stevenson will face former WBC super-middleweight title holder and former WBA world light-heavyweight titleholder Badou Jack on May 19th in Montreal, Canada. The bout will be broadcast live in the United States via Showtime as part of the Network’s split broadcast which will feature the return of WBC & WBA world welterweight champion Keth Thurman against an unnamed opponent at the time of publication at the Barclays center, Brooklyn, New York.
Stevenson has by many had a controversial reign as WBC titleholder with criticism aimed towards the Haitian-Canadian regarding the calibre of opponents faced in his title reign, lack of enthusiasm to fight a unification contest historically with Sergey Kovalev along with only obliging the WBC with one mandatory defence of his title. Stevenson who won the WBC world title in 2013 with a knockout against Chad Dawson, last obliged the WBC mandatory in November 2013 against Tony Bellew. Adonis has successfully defended his world title eight times and could equal the Canadian record for the most successful world title defences with a victory over Badou Jack on May 19th (Record set by Lucian Bute with 9).
Badou Jack himself is a former two-weight world title holder returns to action following his world title victory over previous WBA world titleholder Nathan Cleverly in August, defeating Cleverly in five rounds via stoppage to claim the WBA title. Following victory Jack was mandated to face Dmitry Bivol in his first defence, Jack However, decided to vacate the title instead and chase a fight with Stevenson which had been widely predicted for the majority of 2017.
The contest will be held at Montreal’s famous Bell Center which plays home to NHL franchise Montreal Canadiens, will be the 12th time Stevenson has fought in the Canadian city of Montreal.
